Let’s collect commentary from different sources! Let’s make a roadmap, connecting ideas from posts even when the posts themselves aren’t directly linked to each other! Let’s allow readers to choose what they want to learn at the moment!
In other words, I know that:
- Convincing people to read the Sequences (i.e. Rationality: from AI to Zombie by Eliezer Yudkowsky) can be notoriously difficult
- Reading the Sequences by yourself can be notoriously difficult and even annoying, especially if one doesn’t have technical background or doesn’t like Yudkowsky’s writing style
- The Sequences tend to change the lives of those who read them for the better
- One can get even more positive changes if they have someone to discuss the Sequences with
- Indeed, over the years (starting from 2006-2009) there were tons of discussions, either in comments, in stand-alone blog posts or during reading clubs
- I can’t get myself to read the Sequences myself, so I’d like to create a reading format that would be fun enough for me, yet potentially useful for the others as well
My main inspiration sources for this project were The Guild of the Rose and The Farmer Was Replaced. Both provide a roadmap:
- The Guild of the Rose allows to choose from three different archetypes (i.e. three different study paths), so one can learn what they find the most relevant at the moment
- The Farmer was Replaced teaches the player Python in an inherently self-paced way: one can easily skip the early game if it feels too easy, but one also can postpone advancing further, giving themselves more time to understand not even the syntax, but the algorithms required to solve another puzzle
I haven’t mentioned yet that Rationality: From AI to Zombie has whopping 333 essays. It’s around 1300 pages in the PDF version from 2015. It’s also a crazy amount of work to cover everything – so at first I’ll focus on mindmaps based on one essay (+ maybe some comments), then – hopefully by then my motivation doesn’t die in the process – will try to create something bigger.
